Do You Think That These Are The Best Solutions For Your Problem?

Tips for Dealing With Problems At Work

By Deb Hawken

Some people love their work, but most people would say that they have no choice but to work.
Whilst some were lucky in their education because they were naturally academic or had a flair for something that they have been able to turn into a much-loved career, still more people didn't enjoy or struggled at school and just fell into a job when they left school.
The people who love their work and are doing what they're good at are fortunate, because they tend to have the skills and contacts to move on quickly if they become unhappy.
The ones who don't feel trapped because they feel that their choices are limited. Job hunting for them is a real problem because they stick with the same dead-end career and lang up looking for something they don't really want in the first place. So if you hate your job, read on for some thoughts and ideas.
Hate the Work You Do?
  • Ask yourself what you would be doing if you could do a job you love.
  • Many people do evening courses to improve their life and career.
  • Just because you didn't thrive at school you're older and more determined now, so give further education a go.
  • There are a number of on-line courses where you can gradually retrain or add to your skills and get recognised certificates.
  • Think about your skills and ask yourself "are they transferable into another, career?"
  • Do you have any hobbies that could translate into your own business or a new career? Think how successful a simple idea like cup cakes has been.
  • Remember that Richard Branson has no O Levels.
  • Be prepared to go out and find information and talk to people, there is so much out there that can change your life if you're willing to find it.
Trouble With the Boss?
  • If they've really overstepped the mark you can seek advice and take action, and you must be ready to do this if you feel that you are being unfairly treated or discriminated against in some way. The advice will tell you whether you can go forward with a case successfully.
  • Ask for a meeting and take a colleague with you to try and sort it out.
  • Listen as well as speak, you may receive criticism but once you know what the problem is you can work on it.
  • At the end of the day the boss is always the boss and if you don't like working for them you would do better to give up and job hunt. They have a right to run their department/company the way they see fit.
Trouble with a Colleague?
  • Running to the boss is very hard so don't do this unless you have to.
  • Work out how the colleague is pushing your buttons and find a way to stay calm (deep breathing, becoming busy, walking away).
  • If they are not pulling their weight do as much work as you can in a day and go home. As long as you have pulled your weight nothing bad can happen.
  • If they create gossip and tension refuse to discuss it with anyone and eventually they will get the message and leave you out of it.
  • If they are angry and yelling, leave the room to make coffee or visit the rest room and come back when it's over. Don't be there.
Be Realistic
  • If your career pays your bills the main issue is solved, you now need to find ways to change your career, and you have time.
  • Don't quit until you have another income.
  • Times are tough, protect your finances at all costs, a bad job is better than no job.
  • Bad relationships can be improved with determination and if you're prepared to meet people half way and be seen to stand up for yourself quietly and firmly.
On a Personal Level
  • Take up meditation, Tai Chi or Yoga to help you stay calm and centred.
  • Practice deep breathing when there is tension at work.
  • Know when to get involved and when to walk away.
  • If you want to start a business start it as a hobby and save all the income so that you have a year's wages behind when you're ready to go it alone.
  • Don't believe that you're the only person in the world with no skills.
  • Drive and determination are as important if not more so that skills and education.
  • Research, find out what is going on and what careers are out there.
  • Be prepared to change yourself.
  • Be steady, sensible and brave. Change takes time so be prepared to wait.
  • Think outside the box.
  • Be proactive. Don't sit and wait for someone else to come and save you.
These are just some ideas, there are millions of ideas out there waiting for you to link into them. Be bold, search the Internet, talk to people, look at courses on line and at your local college. See what other people are doing. Ask yourself what you enjoy and how you can earn money from it.
So many, many ideas, and all that's needed is for you to do something.
