Do You Think That These Are The Best Solutions For Your Problem?

What To Consider When You Donate Career Clothing

By Jaclyn Hurley

If you are one of the millions of people who have been unemployed for an extended period there is help available to you. It is organizations that are soliciting others to donate career clothing. These garments are then distributed to people who may not have access to appropriate apparel to wear to a job interview. First impressions account for many people being hired in the job market and if you do not look the part you may not succeed regardless of your skill set.

Churches and non-profit organizations assist those who need a chance to get back on their feet by teaching them new skills, giving them a place to live and helping them to prepare for the eventual job interview. Part of this process is helping them to acquire appropriate clothes and showing them how to present themselves to a potential employer.

Shelters for battered women often have or are affiliated with organizations that help their clients dress for success. Many of the women who have escaped violent environments benefit from these programs. The self confidence they gain from having proper attire to get and keep a job can mean the difference between remaining independent and being forced to return to her abuser.

Virtually all churches have areas where they collect donations for those people who are needier than the rest of the parish. Some of these churches set aside another area for people who need clothes and accessories to assist them in looking for work. They and most other organizations ask that the items be clean and undamaged. They prefer that you bring them in on a hanger to help prevent wrinkling and they will supply you with a list of acceptable garments if you ask for it.

The list for women will ask for matching business suits, shoes, skirts, blouses, and slacks. They also appreciate office quality jewelry, purses and other accessories. The programs who offer these services ask that the clothes be seasonal so as to be appropriate for work immediately. They also prefer that they not be out dated or damaged.

The men's list is somewhat shorter but basically the same. They want lightly worn suits, dress shirts, shoes, new black stockings, new underwear, and unused toiletries. They request that you do not send polo shirts, vests or sweaters, jeans or khakis and corduroys because they are not appropriate for a job interview.

National women's organizations have rallied to help support women in shelters by partnering with local affiliates to supply them with a fitting with a professional who will assist them in selecting appropriate apparel for their interview. If they get the job they are then treated to several more outfits to allow them to have enough of a wardrobe to finish the first week of work. There is a follow up program called working wardrobe that continues to help them dress for success.

The work that these organizations are doing is helping many people get back on the job. They have made dreams come true for people who thought they were finished. Donations to them should be considered a pleasure.
